These two choral works are easily in the ranks of the best works in choral music history. The Mozart solemn vespers is a musical setting of Psalms 110- 113 and then the Magnificat (Luke 1: 46-55). This solemn vespers was traditionally used for vespers (around 6 p.m.) on Sundays (hence the solemn). Embedded within this work is the famous Laudate Dominum for Soprano solo and chorus. Mozart composed this piece when he was 24 years old. Following the intermission, the chorale, soloists and orchestra will perform the Magnificat in D by J.S. Bach. This is one of the major choral works by Bach and is scored for soloists, choir and orchestra. Of particular note in the orchestration is the use of two piccolo trumpets. Joining the orchestra will be Lynn Erickson (trumpet with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra) and Pam Humphrey. Our program will feature their considerable talents preceding the Mozart by a performance of the Vivaldi concerto for two trumpets.
Last year’s Festival proved to be a great success, with over 600 people in attendance for Mozart’s Requiem. Many folks in the audience that night offered high praise and were greatly moved by the experience.
